Sovereign AI, explained

What sovereign AI
actually means

"Sovereign AI" gets used loosely. We mean something precise: control over four dials, set per workload, so each use of AI is exactly as sovereign as it needs to be and no more. Your data, models and compute stay under your control, in the UK, provable to your regulator.

Dial 1: Data

Where your data goes, what is screened before it leaves, and where it is stored. UK residency by configuration.

Dial 2: Model

Which model answers, commercial or open-weight, and whether it runs on someone else's infrastructure or yours.

Dial 3: Compute

Where inference happens, from a UK cloud region to your own on-premises hardware, air-gapped if required.

Dial 4: Governance

Who can access what, at what cost, with what audit trail, provable to your regulator.

Per workload

Same architecture, different dial settings

Sovereignty is not a product you buy or a box you tick. It is a set of choices made per workload. A low-risk drafting task can use a commercial model in a UK cloud region. A patient-data workload can run an open-weight model on your own hardware, fully air-gapped.

Why it matters now

Regulation is tightening while capability races ahead

UK regulation is tightening (NHS DSPT v8 by 30 June 2026, EU AI Act high-risk obligations from 2 August 2026) while AI capability races ahead. A generic cloud AI subscription cannot answer the residency, provenance and audit questions a regulator will ask. Setting these four dials per workload can.
